Reading Nonfiction: Becoming Experts!

This is an activity where we spent a week.  First, the students picked a book (topic) of nonfiction and read that book.  They listed off facts and details about what they read.  Next, they read another book on that same topic (ie:  2 different books on cheetahs).  Then, they listed off new details and facts as well as differences between the books.  We were each an expert on our topics!

Guest Reader

We've been enjoying hearing Taylor's favorite Dr. Suess books.  This is her sharing her second fuzzy ticket this year of reading aloud!

WOW!  Where has the month gone?  We've been so busy the past several weeks, that I've fallen behind on new posts.  I've been taking pictures of all our activities though, so I'll post them here to catch up.  👌😀

Main Idea and Supporting Details

We've been using our nonfiction reading to help us identify the main idea and supporting details in a text.

We worked in small groups using the book Why Do Leaves Change Color?  Then we took turns reading and then wrote what we thought was the main idea and details from the chapter.

Each group took turns sharing their main idea and details findings with the class.

We were so excited to hear back from a couple of Veterans that we wrote to!  A few weeks ago, we had written letters and send pictures we colored to Veterans.  We've heard back from 2 different people who appreciated our letters.  It made us feel proud and happy to have made someone else's day a little brighter!!!

New Books!

Every student received a new book for November.  Today we read the back blurb about November Night and are interested to read more to find out what happens!  We would like to give a big thank you to the family of Ava Grindle for sponsoring our November book for our classroom!!!☺

Thanksgiving Placemats

For our PBIS November activity, each class made placemats for Thanksgiving.  All the placemats will be taken to local churches who are providing meals for needy or homeless people on Thanksgiving.  We enjoyed making these and decorating with turkeys!
