Main Idea and Supporting Details

We've been using our nonfiction reading to help us identify the main idea and supporting details in a text.

We worked in small groups using the book Why Do Leaves Change Color?  Then we took turns reading and then wrote what we thought was the main idea and details from the chapter.

Each group took turns sharing their main idea and details findings with the class.

We were so excited to hear back from a couple of Veterans that we wrote to!  A few weeks ago, we had written letters and send pictures we colored to Veterans.  We've heard back from 2 different people who appreciated our letters.  It made us feel proud and happy to have made someone else's day a little brighter!!!

Thanksgiving Placemats

For our PBIS November activity, each class made placemats for Thanksgiving.  All the placemats will be taken to local churches who are providing meals for needy or homeless people on Thanksgiving.  We enjoyed making these and decorating with turkeys!

Nonfiction Text Features

In our Reader's Workshop Unit, Becoming Experts:  Reading Nonfiction, we've been learning about text features and how they can help give us more information on a topic.  Yesterday, we used highlighters to go through copies of the book Why Do Leaves Change Color? and used them to mark captions, table of contents (and chapter headings), the glossary page, labels, diagrams, and charts.

Be Proud, Read Aloud!
